Life on Planet Earth

Do you love mud? It’s everywhere. Without dirt and water, there would be no mud. Without dirt and water, there would be no plants and no flowers or *chocolate. Mud brings into focus how different life inside versus life outside under the stars without a roof and a floor are. Do you love to experience ocean breezes under a lightly swaying umbrella? Without oxygen, there can be no currents of air and no fire in fireplaces. If you love mud and flowers, wind and fire and life on our planet, then you might love my paintings.

Earth, Air, Water, and Fire, and life, here. These are the subjects I portray in my art.

You might find me sitting near a shoreline under an umbrella at a beach or on a tiny deck outside. I might be found studying flowers, clouds, and meteor showers. I have a tent and a grill and love to camp out and cook out. Kayaking and bicycling are new and old loves. I’ve been a lifelong student of art and I consider it a vocation, not a hobby. All of my art is for sale and is always negotiable.

Living in cities, towns, and ranches throughout the southwest United States colors my art. Please see the story behind the painting, “Mud Muse”, featured in this website.

Thanks for L@@KING!

*Several years ago, the opposite of chocolate, in my opinion, was mud. In more recent years, I have developed respect for mud.

Mud Musings

“Mud Muse” is a portrait of mud. The medium I used in the painting of mud is oil (not mud). This oil painting depicts the wonderful mud of Estancia, NM; but, as we know, muddy situations exist everywhere!

This is the story of the painting:

The pickup truck slid off the road, as many a vehicle has on these fantastically muddy county roads. The cowboy slipped and fell on his way to meet the pickup truck driver–the mud is really that slick! The Mud Muse is seen entering a small adobe abode, attracted by the wonderful aroma of a fresh cup of high mountain pinon coffee. As in any home built on the hilly prairies around Estancia, muddy footprints are being tracked inside. Featured as well are the little burrowing owl and the prairie dog, and the ever present goat and cow found on many ranches in this area. The mailbox is in a typical pose.  The rancher and his dog are walking back to the house, hoping to catch the muse unaware. The little black cat in the window looks on in a-muse-ment! Everything always ends with a beautiful rainbow, which may be a cliche, but it is a fact of life in the high desert areas of New Mexico after a welcome rain.

This work of art would look perfect on a wall at an off-roading spot’s place of business!

SUGAR COWSKULL

If they are lucky, cows spend most of their lives grazing on grass, including  occasional flowers. Sometimes they specifically seek out certain flowers, such as those of the yucca.

This painted cow skull takes its inspiration from the lives of cows and their diets of grasses and flowers. This cow skull was found on the ranch in NM, and then painted with acrylics. A sugar cow skull of flowers!
